Lenawee Community Mental Health Authority is currently recruiting an occasional part time (working about 15 hours per week) Peer Mentor (for the I/DD Services team).

Who is LCMHA?

LCMHA (Lenawee Community Mental Health Authority) provides or manages a full array of services to adults and children with mental health and/or emotional disturbances, persons with substance use disorders, and persons with developmental disabilities. Our mission is to create a path to resilience, recovery, wellness, and self-determination for these individuals.

What would this job entail?

The Peer Mentor provides support services to adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities; these services include opportunities to support, mentor and assist beneficiaries to achieve community inclusion and participation, independence, and productivity. This individual is someone with an intellectual and developmental disability and has a unique skill level from their own experience in utilizing services and supports to achieve their goals. This individual offers the benefit of their own personal experiences, passing along encouragement and support to help others construct their own advocacy. Specifically, this individual will:

  • Help individuals who have I/DD's to:
    • Advocate for their own goals;
    • Identify their personal interests, goals, strengths, and areas of need;
    • Build their own independent lives.
  • Assist individuals who have I/DD's with person-centered planning goals.
  • Provide ongoing peer mentorship to teach individuals about healthy social interaction, overcoming fears, problem solving, and increasing overall personal wellness.
  • Perform a wide range of tasks to assist and support individuals in regaining independence within the community and building and sustaining their connections to the community.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

The qualifications for this position are:

  • No specific type of previous work experience is required;
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Lived experience with a documented intellectual and developmental disability (I/DD) diagnosis is required, and must be willing to share personal experiences to guide and support others.
  • Must currently be receiving behavioral health services for having an intellectual and/or developmental disability (or received this type of service in the past) at LCMHA;
  • Basic computer knowledge (such as familiarity with email and internet use) and experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) is highly desirable.

The hourly wage for this position ranges:

From:

  • $17.14 (annualized: $13,369 – based on a 15 hour work week / the starting wage);

To:

  • $22.14 (annualized: $17,269 – based on a 15 hour work week).

The range is based on the number of years of service with the agency.

The benefits package includes:

Employees receive scheduled salary increases, starting after having worked 1,950 hours.

Retirement Benefit: participation starts as of the first day of employment.
